Ecobank Malawi Donates MK175 Million Towards National Disaster and Hunger Relief

18 February 2026

Lilongwe, Malawi – 18 February 2026 – Ecobank Malawi has today made a humanitarian contribution of MK175 Million to support Government-led disaster and hunger relief efforts, following the declaration of a State of National Disaster in Malawi.

The handover ceremony was attended by the Honourable Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralisation, Hon. Joseph Mathyola Mwanamveka, MP, senior Government officials, and Ecobank Malawi leadership.

Speaking at the event, the Honourable Minister of Finance welcomed the support from Ecobank Malawi and underscored the importance of private sector participation in responding to national challenges.

“On behalf of his Excellency the State President of the Republic of Malawi, Prof. Aurthur Peter Muntharika, the Government and the People of Malawi, allow me to extend sincere appreciation to the Board, Management and Staff of Ecobank Malawi for the timely support towards the 2025/26 lean season food insecurity program. We truly appreciate the continued partnership and solidarity demonstrated by Ecobank Malawi. This contribution will strengthen our collective response and help reach vulnerable communities affected by hunger and climate-related disasters,” said Hon. Mwanamveka.

Ecobank Malawi Board Chairman said the donation reflects the Bank’s purpose and pan-African development mandate:

“Ecobank’s purpose is to build a world-class pan-African bank while contributing to the economic and financial development of the continent. In Malawi, that purpose means standing alongside our communities and working with the Government during critical times,” said the Ecobank Malawi Board Chairman.

“This MK175 Million humanitarian contribution is intended to help vulnerable communities affected by food insecurity and climate-related disasters, while reinforcing our commitment to partnership with Government to protect livelihoods, strengthen resilience, and deliver lasting impact for the people of Malawi.”

The Chairman further reaffirmed Ecobank’s role beyond banking, noting that the Bank remains a committed development partner supporting national priorities.

The contribution will be channeled through Government-designated disaster relief mechanisms, coordinated by the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA), to support vulnerable communities most affected by food insecurity, in line with Ecobank Group’s CSR, governance, and sustainability frameworks.

Ecobank Malawi reiterated its commitment to partnering with Government and stakeholders to advance resilience, inclusion, and sustainable development across the country.
